In a tough economy, the last thing we need are taxes that eliminate jobs and prevent new businesses from opening in South Carolina. A recent South Carolina law---known as point of sale---allows local governments to dramatically increase property taxes on homes, land and businesses when they are sold. For example, if you buy a home, you could pay higher property taxes than an identical home in your neighborhood. This flawed law is unfair, and is hurting our economy. Because of the unfair point of sale tax, some companies have said they will not relocate or open new businesses in South Carolina. Our state has lost hundreds of millions in economic investment and that means businesses are taking their jobs to other states. South Carolinians feel strongly about attracting new businesses and jobs to the state, and believe the point of sale law is hurting our economy, the housing market, and working families. There's a fix for this law in a bill before the legislature. Read more about how you can help get this law corrected.

AUGUST 2009: Allison Strider, Jeannine Kees, Carol Riley, Lauren Dawkins and Edna Fischer of CENTURY 21 The Moore Group participated in a two-day membership event for the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce. Their team, which also consisted of other local business leaders, raised over $5,000, garnered 34 new members for the Chamber, and came in third place behind Cox Wood Preserving and The Times and Democrat. The goal for all teams was 151 new members. If the teams exceeded that goal, David Coleman of the Chamber, Raoul Sailer of SC Federal Credit Union, and Jim Johnson of All Star Deli and Priority Home Medical were to dress as The Supremes and perform for everyone. With over 200 new members solicited, the performance at the Orangeburg Country Club was enjoyed by all.

MAY 2009: Jeannine Kees, Vice President and Broker-in-Charge of CENTURY 21 The Moore Group recently attended the CENTURY 21 Real Estate National Broker Communication Congress (NBCC) in Washington, D.C. The annual event brings CENTURY 21® System brokers and managers from around the United States together to discuss important issues to the CENTURY 21® System and the industry in general.

Members of the CENTURY 21 National Brokers Communication Congress are elected by their peers to serve on this prestigious committee. During the meetings CENTURY 21® System brokers had an opportunity to meet with their local U.S. Senators and Congressmen and raise important issues for the real estate industry including:

  • Government's focus needs to move away from foreclosure mitigation and into a true demand-side stimulus. Go beyond the $8,000 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit and help create incentives for all home buyers. Increase the tax credit for all home buyers to $15,000.
  • If the Treasury were to implement 4% to 4.25% 30-year fixed mortgage rates, they could create a floor that would stimulate home sales (for those with good credit - today's underwriting standards in place), increase consumer confidence and thus create a "waterfall effect" that would have a broad impact on the overall economy.
  • The National Association of REALTORS® estimates that each home sale at the median price generates "approximately $62,000" of economic impact, and that housing and housing related services equal 21% of U.S. GDP (source: Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies).

"It is important for real estate professionals to make sure their voices are heard in the halls of Congress and in the local community," said Kees. "The conference provided me with a great deal of insight into the legislative process. I'm very proud to be affiliated with a brand that has taken such a proactive leadership position in trying to help the housing market."

In addition to the visit to Capitol Hill, conference attendees participated in various sessions that provided informative and creative ideas on how to offer increased levels of service and convenience to their clients, utilize new technologies and capitalize on changing market dynamics in order to help grow their business.
